Does acupuncture hurt?

Acupuncture needles are thinner than a human hair, and insertion of the needles is generally painless.  Patients report sensations including tingling, deep pressure, achiness, heaviness, or nothing at all.  Some patients feel sensations of ‘energy’ running throughout the body or into the area being treated.  We focus on making our treatment painless and relaxing, so if you feel any pain or discomfort, just tell us, and we will modify your treatment.

What is a treatment like at Acupuncture Wellness Solutions?

Depending on your health issues and the type of consult we are doing (herbal, acupuncture, nutrition) you can expect your initial visit to last approximately 1.5 hours. We take the time to review your comprehensive health history to begin to understand the root of your health issues, not simply address your symptoms. We will also ask additional questions that may seem unusual, but will help us determine your Chinese Medicine diagnosis. Your tongue and pulse will also be analyzed, as this is a traditional diagnostic technique.

Subsequent visits usually last about 1 hour. Frequency of subsequent visits vary widely, depending on the severity of the condition, intensity of pain, and how long the problem has been in place. Chronic, severe conditions generally take longer to correct than recent injuries.

Acupuncture cannot correct every condition in every person. Following your consultation, exam and initial treatment, we will have a good idea of how your condition will respond to this treatment. If we don’t think our clinic is the best choice for you, we will refer you to one of the many great doctors in our network so you receive the best care for your specific needs. If we think we can help, we will estimate a treatment plan and give you an idea of how many visits you will need.

If possible, wear comfortable clothes and eat something prior to your visit to the clinic

How many treatments will I need?

Our goal is to help you feel better as soon as possible. Many issues (especially simple pain conditions) respond very quickly and are resolved within one to two treatments. For more chronic, internal problems, 4-6 or more visits are often needed . Even with chronic, long standing health problems, patients generally feel immediate relief after treatment, but may need several more visits for lasting change.

How often do I have to come?

Acupuncture is most effective if sessions are done 1-2 times per week initially. This creates momentum and lasting results.   As the condition improves, the treatments are done less frequently.

Will my insurance cover acupuncture?

Very likely! More and more insurance plans are offering acupuncture benefits! We are in the process of becoming ‘in-network’ with the insurance plans in the area, and currently do not bill insurance directly. In the meantime, we will be happy to provide you with a bill to submit to your insurance company for reimbursement. If you do not have acupuncture benefits, we offer many budget plans to make this treatment affordable for you. Remember, acupuncture and herbal medicine can be tax deductable!
